In ancient mythology, the Apple was one of the most sacred trees; it symbolized good health and future happiness. Since ancient times it has also been known as the Tree of Love. My art helps reflect how far we’ve come together to change history. I grew up with friends and family members that hated school or being in a social setting because they would be looked at differently. I was bullied my entire life in elementary school and middle school for having parents that didn’t speak english. On the second page of my Zine the tree and the two individuals picking apples from the tree represent people that were able to fit in and be socially accepted. The girl upset represents me, my friends, and family members that were also bullied for being different. The second page highlights the year before 1964. I was inspired to draw this image because I wasn’t the only person judged for being different. The third page symbolizes when the Civil rights act was passed and society was beginning to move forward by acknowledging we are all equal. The fourth page represents movement and people coming together to fight for peace. The fifth page takes us back to the year of 2015 when the LGBT community was looked as equal and the U.S supreme court legalized same sex marriage. This was a big moment in my life because I had an aunt that was finally able to be married to the woman she loved. On the sixth page I drew the world because it helps highlight people we're finally coming together. The apples represent change and history being made. The black highlights that no matter who you are and what you’ve been through no one can tell you not to pull your apple. The eight image helps highlight justice because the trees show people we're noticing that the world shouldn’t be just about one tree but if we plant more trees and include everyone the apple would be stronger. The last image is a very powerful art piece I drew. The black highlights all the negative things I was told that impacted and my confidence. The middle guy symbolizes the apple and the people holding hands represent me waving bye to everything that made me not want to be myself.
